A Look at New York Yankees World Series Win Streaks

Winning the World Series is the ultimate goal for Major League Baseball (MLB) teams. Five teams have failed to win a World Series title, including the Seattle Mariners, who have yet to reach a World Series. On the other hand, several MLB franchises have won numerous World Series championships and even set unique World Series win records. The New York Yankees and the Athletics, for example, are the only teams to win three consecutive World Series titles. While the Athletics achieved this feat between 1972 and 1974, the Yankees have won three or more World Series on three separate occasions.

The Yankees are the most successful MLB team of all time, with 41 World Series appearances and 27 victories. However, the franchise went 18 seasons before making its first World Series appearance in 1921, a losing effort to the rival New York Giants. The Yankees lost to the Giants in the World Series again the following year before finally overcoming their cross-town rivals in a 4-2 series win to claim the franchise’s first MLB championship in 1923.

From that point on, Yankees fans rarely had to wait long for World Series success. The team reached the league’s championship series for a fourth time in 1926. Despite a seven-game series loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, the team responded with back-to-back World Series sweeps. Another 4-0 series sweep came in 1932, the franchise’s fourth championship.

The Yankees’ first of three World Series hat tricks began in 1936. Led by MLB icons like Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio, the team won 102 regular-season games before eliminating the Giants in six games. The Yankees won 102 games once again the following season, this time defeating the Giants in five games. Despite a slight decrease to 99 wins in 1938, the Yankees became the first MLB franchise to win three consecutive World Series by beating the Chicago Cubs in four games. New York capped off one of the most dominant runs in North American sports by winning 106 games in 1939 before sweeping the Cincinnati Reds for a fourth World Series in a row.

New York hardly slowed down after the streak ended, winning championships in 1941, 1943, and 1947. The Yankees subsequently embarked on the most impressive World Series streak in league history.

The 1949 New York Yankees also featured Joe DiMaggio, who won nine World Series rings during his 13 years with the Yankees, second only to his teammate, Yogi Berra. The Yankees began their historic streak with a five-game series win over the Brooklyn Dodgers. The Philadelphia Phillies failed to win a game against New York in the 1950 World Series. The Yankees faced a tougher test against the Giants, overcoming a 2-1 series deficit to win a third straight championship in six games. In 1952, the Dodgers pushed the Yankees to their limit, losing a decisive Game 7 by a score of 4-2. The Yankees broke their own World Series victory streak the following season, this time defeating the Dodgers in six games.

The Yankees increased their win total from 99 games to 103 games in 1954 but missed the World Series. The team would then reach nine of the next 10 World Series, winning four. Between 1947 and 1964, the Yankees appeared in 15 or 18 World Series, winning 10.

The Yankees’ third championship hat trick began in 1998. The likes of Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera. The team set a franchise record and fell two games shy of the MLB record by winning 114 games, then went 11-2 in the post-season, including a sweep of the San Diego Padres in the World Series. The Yankees swept the Atlanta Braves to win the 1999 World Series, ending an 11-1 post-season campaign, then completed the hat trick by beating the New York Mets in a closely contested five-game series win.
