Making sure driving safety is at or near the top of your priority list is important.

Never forget the fact that it only takes one auto accident to change your life forever.

With that in mind, what steps have you been taking to lower your odds of being in a crash?

1. Watch for Distractions on the Road

No matter what kind of vehicle you are driving, it is important to always keep your focus on the road.

With that being the case, remember to avoid any of the following potential problems:

· Using your cell phone while driving – One of the worst things you can do as a driver is be busy with your cell phone. Should an emergency come up, do your best to get to a safe spot off the road to use your phone. Always remember that normal texting and calling can wait. It is not worth risking your life or the lives of others.

· Drinking too much alcohol – While some do fine after only one alcoholic beverage, the same is not true for all. That said know what your limits are and never top them. Even if you survive an accident, you could be looking at trouble. This can include the loss of your license, fines, and even potential jail time with a DUI.

· Drowsy driving – Last, being too sleep behind the wheel can be quite a danger too. With that being the case, make sure you are not drowsy when out on the roads. If you feel your eyes getting heavy, find somewhere say to pull off. You could even catch a quick nap if needed.

2. What You Drive Matters

The kind of vehicle you have also plays a big role in being the safest driver possible.

So, make sure whatever vehicle you buy has gotten a thorough check. This is especially important if buying a used car.

Think about a free license plate search when looking at used vehicles.

Such a search can provide you with different clues on the history of the auto in question.

From if it has been in any accidents to if there are any current recalls going on, learn about the vehicle.

Remember, the more knowledge you have about the auto, the less of a chance you will drive home with a problem.

3. Know the Conditions You Face

Last, know the driving conditions that you have to deal with.

An example of this is when you are dealing with inclement weather.

Whether rain, snow and even ice, don’t try and be a superhero out on the roads. You are much better off when you do everything possible to leave a little early for work or appointments. In doing this, you will not be rushing in bad weather to get somewhere. If you do rush, you could be only seconds away from a serious accident.

It is also important that your vehicle is going to be able to handle such conditions.

Make sure if you need them you have good snow tires. Also check your windshield wipers to be sure they can operate at top efficiency.

In becoming a safer driver, know what stakes are in play each time you get behind the wheel.
