Documents on BZ: A Partial List

>>> The chemical BZ is a "superhallucinogen" that violently detaches users from reality for days at a time. The Army studied and developed it for use as a weapon from the early 1960s through the mid 1970s. [read more]

The Memory Hole made a FOIA request to the Defense Technical Information Center - a part of the Defense Department - for a computerized bibliography of all documents containing "BZ" or any of its synonyms ("QNB," "EA 2277," "quinuclidinyl benzilate," or "quinuclidinebenzillate"). We received a list of around 450 documents. Approximately 70 are completely unrestricted and are available through the government-run National Technical Information Service.

The remaining 380 or so are either classified or have some form of unclassified restriction (such as "official use only"). In order to get any of these, an individual must file a FOIA request or a Mandatory Declassification Review request with the "controlling activity." The Memory Hole is requesting many of these reports and will scan & post them here as they arrive.

Highlights from the lists of BZ documents are below. If you would like a paper copy of both lists in their entirety, click here for instructions.
