Lesbian
The stigma of being gay affects everyone
differently. Research suggests that lesbians may find it more difficult
to cope with the stigmatization because females are socialized to avoid
interpersonal conflict. And for some, substance use is a way to escape
or postpone a conflict.[Source]
Misinformation, homophobia among health care providers,
and a lack of scientific data on basic lesbian health needs result in
dangerously inadequate medical care for many lesbians… In order to
improve lesbian health care, comprehensive research must be conducted,
homophobia must be addressed within the medical profession, and
lesbians and their providers must become better informed.
